Excess Sweating

An end to embarrassing perspiration problems

Treatment Info

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive perspiration (sweating) beyond that necessary to maintain normal body temperature. Hyperhidrosis can have a major impact on one’s quality of life. Sweaty hands, feet or armpits are embarrassing at the least and can increase anxiety and stress in both occupational and social situations. Botox® is very effective in the treatment of hyperhidrosis.

What is Botulinum Toxin and how does it work?

Botulinum Toxin is a naturally occurring protein derived from the Bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. The popular brand names used in the UK are BOTOX®, AZZALURE®, VISTABEL®, DYSPORT® BOCUTURE® and XENOMIN®. When small doses are injected into the skin, Botox® temporarily blocks the actions of the nerves that supply the eccrine glands; this prevents the glands from producing sweat.

Is the treatment safe?

Botulinum Toxin is currently the gold standard treatment for Hyperhidrosis. The treatment is quick, very effective, long lasting and for most, life changing too. Most importantly however the treatment is safe when carried out by trained medical practitioners. Botulinum Toxin has been used in Medicine for over 25 years and tens of thousands of patients receive Botox® treatments every year.

Preparing for the treatment

During your consultation with the doctor a full medical history will be taken to assess your suitability, and the benefits and potential side effects will be discussed in full. Since most people are keen to get the problem sorted as soon as possible it is possible to have the treatment carried out immediately after the consultation if you wish to do so.

What is the treatment like?

Using tiny micro-needles, very small amounts of Botulinum Toxin are injected just below the surface of the skin. Typically in the armpit, Botox® is injected into 10-15 places about 1-2 cm apart. The needles are very fine so discomfort is minimal, however anaesthetic cream can be applied if required.

After the treatment

You can resume normal activities, drive yourself home or return to work immediately after the treatment.

How quickly does it work and how long does it last?

The reduction of sweating starts to take effect within a few days although it can take up to 10 days to take full effect. Typically, the reduction in sweating lasts for 7 months.

Who is and who is not suitable for Hyperhidrosis treatment?

Healthy men and women suffering from excessive sweating are usually good candidates for this treatment however anyone who is pregnant, breast feeding or suffering from severe neuromuscular disorders, Bell’s palsy or blood coagulation disorders are not suitable for treatment with Botulinum Toxin

Will it interact with medication that I am taking?

Drug interactions can occur when Botulinum Toxin is used concomitantly with other medications. You must ensure that your doctor is aware of any medications you are taking, especially aminoglycoside antibiotics (gentamicin, neomycin), aspirin, anti-inflammatories, Gingko Biloba and St John’s Wort.

Are there any side effects?

Since the injection is made only into the skin, using very small amounts of medication, side effects are rare but may include bruising.
